SUMMARIES
Ch. 1 - 8
The story begins in Huck's home and introduces the main characters of the story. We also learn a few important details from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Huck doesn't act properly, and Miss Watson is constantly trying to "sivilize him." After Huck decides to begin acting properly, such as by going to school and taking baths regularly, his father, Pap, begins to get involved in his life. Pap wants the $6000 that Huck and Tom inherited from the last novel and decides to go to court to try to earn the money. Pap also tries to get Huck to stop going to school, most likely because he is jealous of him. Pap kidnaps Huck and locks him in his cabin.
Ch. 9 - 30
After Huck escapes from Pap's cabin, he runs into Miss Watson's slave, Jim. Because everyone thinks that Huck is dead, Jim thinks that Huck is a ghost, but Huck soon convinces him otherwise. Huck heads into town dressed up like a girl to see what the town is saying. Jim and Huck decide that they should leave Jackson's Island as soon as they can so they don't get caught. Huck and Jim spend much of the next 20 chapters floating down the river. They see many different things that contribute to the craziness of the story. Huck and Jim meet a floating house which has a dead man inside it. Huck also ends up living in a house with the Grangerfords who have a strong hatred for their neighbors, the Shepherdsons, the rivalry is very similar to Romeo and Juliet. Jim and Huck later meet a Duke and King(not really) who are runaway criminals who scam people to make money. Their scams go from anywhere from terrible acting to pretending to be fake family members. The Duke and King pretend to be a dead man's cousins from England so they can inherit a large amount of money. However, after the real cousins show up, the king and duke are exposed and the 4 of them must abandon the place as fast as they can. After this, The King sells Jim for $40 dollars and spends the money on booze. Now Huck's problems are real.
Ch. 31 - 43
After Huck realizes the real trouble that Jim is in, he knows he must do something to save him. Huck follows his wits and goes up to a random house that he hopes Jim is at. Whenever someone answers the door, that someone happens to be Aunt Sally, that is Tom Sawyer's aunt. Aunt Sally greets Huck as Tom and is welcomed to be staying with Aunt Sally. Huck then realizes that Tom should be there the next day. Huck intercepts Tom before he gets to Aunt Sally's and Tom introduces himself as Sid Sawyer, Aunt Sally's unknown nephew. After Tom and Huck find out where Jim is staying at, Huck plans to get him out one night and take him back. But since Tom has to be adventurous, he creates a ridiculous plan to set him free. After some time, the night that Huck and Jim plan to set Jim free, their plan goes bad. Many farmers waiting outside shoot at the 3 boys. Tom gets shot in the leg and the 3 are off away from the chaos. Huck decides he should go get a doctor to help with the wound. Doing so would mean Jim would get caught but Jim would rather be caught than Tom be seriously hurt. After Jim and Tom return to the town, the town is outraged at Jim, but it is soon explained what he did and how he helped Tom. They decide to let him go. Tom and Huck decide what they are going to do now that their adventure is over. Huck is worried that Pap has taken all of his money by now, but at that time, Jim reveals that the dead man in the floating house was Pap. Huck decides to head out west to Indian territory before Aunt Sally "sivilizes him."
